四季を通して楽しむ湯沢《残念な冬!》/Enjoying Echigo Yuzawa through a year《What a shameful winter!》
Yuzawa without snow in January: the first time in 20 years!

(English text continues to the latter half of the page)
Yuzawa without snow in January: the first time in 20 years!
I have visited Echigo Yuzawa 3 times since the end of last year. Although I have been visiting there more than 20 years, I have never seen Yuzawa with such little snow!
These are Echigo Yuzawa station and Spa street behind the station on 31st December. You can’t see any flake of snow there! Even though there had been little snow at the end of years, I have not seen such a scenery before. Usually great snowfall in year beginning makes up for little snow, there was no sign of it this year…
These are scenes by Route 17 in the last week of January. I have off course not seen this before in these 20 years.
This is a shot of Yuzawa Central Park. It should be like right one in this season.
Senior people in the town are talking in the public spa that they have not seen this for the first time all through their lives.
This is Ishiuchi Maruyama ski site (Hakkaishi entrance) at the end of January. This is far from being ski slope!
Finally snowing in middle February, I tried ski only twice this year
It snowed finally in mid of February. Although it was fewer snow compared with usual years, I couldn’t miss this opportunity, I’m heading to Kagura Mitsumata, my favorite ski site.
Despite weekday, approximately 200 people are queuing in front of ticket sales. Kagura Mitsumata is located at the highest altitude among all 13 ski resorts in Yuzawa town. So passionate skiers tend to gather at Kagura Mitsumata when there are few snow at lower ski sites.
Right after the opening I arrived Mitsumata site above Gondola. Snow is enough but one gondola among two was suspended. This is also first time to see.
This is the main slope of Kagura. Temperature was -6℃ and snow turned into powder.
This is a shot from the peak of Kagura slope looking down whole Yuzawa town and Iwapparaski site is upper right.
Kagura site is the place with a plenty of intermediate and expert level courses. But I also like Tashiro site, next to Kagura.
This is Panorama shot from Tashiro gondola station. Most of slopes are facing north and snow is powder. Though their main courses are relatively gentle slopes, I love ski tour among birch tree forest!
Nozawaonsen Ski site: this is my last ski of the season
2 days after Kagura Mitsumata I headed to Nozawaonsen beyond a mountain range. This ski resort had been also suffered from little snow but went there expecting fresh snow of 2 days ago.
I have been here every year. New system of non-contact type card was installed this season. Sensitivity was OK, I didn’t stuck at each gate.
A shot toward Mt. Madarao from Yamabiko gondola. The valley was still covered with fog, but mountains are so clear to see.
A shot from the Mt. Kenashi top toward Kijimadaira.
A panorama shot from paradise slope. It was truly a Paradise sliding down to such spectacularview.
The snow condition was not perfect at that day. On the top was quite nice but the foot of the mountain was beyond 10℃ in the afternoon. Snow is expected to melt very quick!
It was quite shame that my ski season is over now. This winter season was really shame, I have no choice but to expect nice next year.
(Extra①)Roadside station “Nozawaonsen” was open
On Route 117 the roadside station “Nozawaonsen” was open. They sell local farm products as well.
(Extra②)Very tasty Musashino-udon on the way back to Tokyo
I dropped in “Inaka-uchi Menzo”, Udon special at Kawagoe, to try Musashino-udon. This is my most favorite udon genre.
This is Nikujiru udon regular (400g) plus 3 tempura set. It costs just \1,000. Plenty of udon noodles and noodles are strong enough. Only tempura was not very crispy and a little bit shame. It is better to try only udon at this place.
